In movies, 'fade in' refers to the opening scene. The point at which a story begins.
I’ve been obsessed with movies my entire life. As a child I would prefer a black and white film over any cartoon. Sometimes it was the entire movie, other times a single scene could completely capture me. The connection was visceral and lasting.
There are many parallels between an opening scene and a moment captured on the canvas. Our own perspectives and experiences tint our perception of what we see. We decide what’s happening and create the narrative in our minds, making each new painting an endless opportunity - for the painter and the viewer - to reveal something we didn’t know about ourselves.
